Do NOT use "Can I get..." when asking for something in a cafe or shop.

All too often we hear British people saying "Can I get...." when, for example, they are asking for a coffee in a cafe. This is impolite. The correct way to place your order in a bar, cafe or shop is to say: "May I have..."

"May I have a black coffee please?"

"May I have a table for two people please?"

"May I have two croissants please?"

Remember: do not say: "Can I get...."

You will hear others using it but don't copy them.
